چکیده

Intraguild predation is a trophic interaction in which two consumers compete for one resource and where one of the consumer species may also feed on its competitor. The intraguild predator’s diet follows from the relative strength of its interactions with its potential prey. Current view holds that weak interactions between species promote the stability of food webs. To the contrary, nutrient enrichment is predicted to destabilize ecosystems. We present a theoretical analysis of the interplay between intraguild predation and nutrient enrichment in a Marr-Pirt chemostat model of a microbial food web. We perform a two-dimensional bifurcation analysis along a gradient of allochtonous nutrient levels and a gradient of one out of two biologically plausible strategies to explore the spectrum of the intraguild predator’s foraging interactions. Both strategies show that intraguild predation may • stabilize food chains; • eliminate chaos, predicted by food chain models; • give rise to multiple stable states; • be favored in systems with low turn-over rates, where the intraguild predator has a low interaction strength and a low yield on the basal resource. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Omnivory as a stabilizing feature of natural communities.

Omnivory-defined broadly as feeding on more than one trophic level-occupies a prominent position in discussions of food web architecture and dynamics, due in large part to an enduring conflict regarding omnivory's role in community dynamics. According to classical results from mathematical food web theory, omnivory destabilizes ecological communities, whereas more recent conceptual syntheses su...

The interplay among prey preference, nutrient enrichment and stability in an omnivory system.

Food webs usually display an intricate mix of trophic interactions where multiple prey are common. In this context omnivory has been the subject of intensive analysis regarding food web stability and structure. In a three species omnivory setting it is shown that the modeling of prey preference by the top predator may exert a strong influence on the short as well as on the long term dynamics of...

SYNTHESIS & INTEGRATION Stability and persistence of food webs with omnivory: Is there a general pattern?

The relationship between omnivory and stability has been the subject of a longstanding debate in ecology. Early theory predicted that omnivory would decrease the probability of food webs being stable. While early empirical data appeared to support the prediction that omnivory should be rare, detailed study of food webs later revealed that omnivory is ubiquitous across ecosystems and taxa. Recen...

Global Stability and Persistence of Three Species Food Web Involving Omnivory

In this paper, the dynamics of a three species food web model consisting of producers, primary consumers and omnivory is studied analytically as well as numeri-cally. The existence of equilibrium points and local stability analysis for this model is carried out together with a bifurcation analysis. The occurrence of hopf bifurcation is also investigated. The persistence conditions of the food w...

Stabilization of chaotic and non-permanent food-web dynamics

Several decades of dynamical analyses of food-web networks [1–6] have led to important insights into the effects of complexity, omnivory and interaction strength on food-web stability [6–8]. Several recent insights [7,8] are based on nonlinear bioenergetic consumer-resource models [9] that display chaotic behavior in three species food chains [10,11] which can be stabilized by omnivory [7] and ...

Niche evolution, trophic structure, and species turnover in model food webs.

The features that govern the stability and persistence of species interaction networks, such as food webs, remain elusive, but recent work suggests that the distribution and strength of trophic links play an important role. Potential omnivory-stability relationships have been investigated and debated extensively, but we still have a relatively poor understanding of how levels of omnivory relate...
